8 Styles to Try When Transitioning

Transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair can be a task in itself. Choosing to not undergo the big chop is a decision that many of those who are in the natural community make and if you ask them about that troubles they ran into, we’re sure they’ll have a few stories to tell. Although anything with your natural hair journey is based off of trial and error, we found that having a bit of a guideline to go by can make things much easier for you.

So, here are eight styles to try during your transitional period.

Flexi rod sets

The moment that you add flexi rods into your routine, you’ll see why the natural community loves them. No matter the size rod or rolling technique you use, you’ll walk away with curls that are to die for. Need the perfect mousse to help you set your rods? Our Frizz Patrol Anti-Poof Twist & Curl Setting Mousse should be the first thing you reach for.

Braid outs

If you hair is the right length, you can give yourself a braid out to produce a loose curl look. This will be super helpful in disguising those multiple textures of hair that come along with transitioning without the big chop. Try using our Curl La La — Defining Curl Custard to achieve maximum definition.

Perm rod sets

Just like flexi rods, perm rods — regardless of the size — can produce a beautiful looking set of curls for you throughout your transitional period. And, if you’re sure to tie your hair up correctly at night (pineappling and mini-pineappling will work great), you’ll be able to rock them for a few days. Don’t forget to let your hair dry completely before removing your rods and to add some oil to your hands — like our line of Natural Growth Oil Blends — before separating your curls.

Braided protective styles

Whether you choose to rock feed-in braids, box braids, or corn rows, getting your hair braided during your transitional period can be a breath of fresh air. And though they are not technically a braided style, faux locs fall in this category of protective styling, too. Not only will you be able to give yourself a break from styling, but your hair will be protected from the stress of daily manipulation. Just don’t forget that your hair needs moisture while in its protective style, too and the Seal It Up — Hydrating Sealing Butter works well for that.

Get a wrap or turban

No matter how far into your natural hair journey you are, there are just some days where you don’t feel like styling your hair. If this is the case for you or you just want to try something new, there are plenty of stylish wraps and turbans on the market for you to consider.

Clip-ins or weave ponytails

A quick and efficient way to give yourself a new style while transitioning would be to buy or create your own clip-ins. Additionally, you can create a sleek ponytail or bun to take the pressure off of finding a new hairstyle every day.

Need something to help you slay those edges for that bun or ponytail? Try our SLICKED! Flexible Styling Glue or the Tame My Edges Smoothing Gel.

Faux-hawk

Faux hawk styles look great on all textures and can even be worn during a non-transitional hair phase, too. If you’re comfortable, you can wear your transitioning texture with this or you can do a twist out, braid out, perm rod set, roller set, or flexi rod set to achieve a killer look.

Crochet styles

Looking for a new style to consider? Try getting a crochet style installed. From braids to curls, crochet styles can give you the same effect that your favorite styles do, but in a shorter time period.
